Congratulations to the Canteen staff at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center for being named the 2011 Outstanding Canteen of the Year at the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) annual banquet held on May 24, 2012 in St. Louis, MO.

Canteens selected for this award had to pass a demanding four-step evaluation process that included:

  • financial profitability and ranking in the top 30% of all canteens;
  • evaluation of operational objectives, measuring employee productivity, survey scores, retail accountability and inventory turns;
  • rating scores in customer service, store appearance and execution of operating standards;
  • un-announced visits by VCSCO staff.

"This is a fantastic accomplishment by our Canteen staff to ensure that our Veterans, families and employees have a great dining experience," said Medical Center Director Joe Battle.  "This recognition is well-deserved."

In 2011, the Jackson VA Canteen underwent an $800,000 dollar renovation to include equipment replacement and upgrade, flooring, lighting, finishes, steam tables, seating and the installation of electronic message boards.

"We increased handicapped accessibilities to better accomodate motorized wheelchairs and scooters," said Don Wainwright, Chief of Facility Management,  "and we also re-designed the traffic flow for speedier service."
