The G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center is seeking nominations for its Wall of Honor program.  The Wall of Honor will be a continuing tribute and recognition program to honor Mississippi’s Veterans.  Four Veterans, selected by an independent committee consisting of employee/Veterans, will be inducted annually into the Wall of Honor at a dedication ceremony in conjunction with the medical center’s Veterans Day program.  To be eligible, a Veteran must be enrolled in VA healthcare at the Jackson VA Medical Center or a Mississippi native having been born in one of the counties served by the Jackson VA Medical Center.  No applications will be accepted for Veterans who served prior to World War II.  Applications will be accepted for living and deceased Veterans.

“We anticipate the Wall of Honor program to be a great tribute to some heroic men and women both during and after their military service,” said Medical Center Director Joe Battle.  “It’s also an opportunity for us to connect with our Veterans, family members, Veteran Service Officers and all of our stakeholders.”

The Jackson VA Wall of Honor will be on display along the main corridor wall next to the Veterans Canteen Service (VCS) Retail Store.  There are two categories for induction:

  • Exemplary heroism or valor while serving on active duty
  • Exemplary service to the community post military service

Inductees and family will be invited to attend the induction ceremony held in November.  A plaque with a framed photograph and information about their personal awards and citations will then be permanently affixed on the wall.

Criteria for induction for exemplary heroism or valor might include Veterans who have been decorated with a personal award and/or citation for heroism or valor.  Awards will be authenticated.  Awards will be ranked following military ranking, i.e., Congressional Medal of Honor being the highest possible decoration.  Multiple awards for bravery, receipt of a Purple Heart, and prisoner of war status will also be considered.  Criteria for induction for exemplary service to the community might include dedication to public service or long-term commitment to improving the greater good.

In order to be considered for the November Veterans Day induction, nomination packets are due at the Medical Center no later than Monday, October 1, 2012.  Submissions can be sent anytime and are being sought from individual Veterans, family, friends, County Veterans Service Officers, service organizations and others.  Nomination packets can be found online at www.jackson.va.gov or by visiting the Jackson VA Medical Center reception desk.  Each submission should include copies, not originals, of awards and citations, a completed authorization for verification form, and a completed submission coversheet.

Completed nomination packets should be forwarded to:
