Jackson VA Takes Proactive Approach to Flood Preparation and Response In Order To Assist Veterans
Flooding within the state of Mississippi has resulted in President Obama declaring 11 counties along the Mississippi River a Federal Disaster area, including Adams, Bolivar, Claiborne, Coahoma, Desoto, Issaquena, Jefferson, Tunica, Warren, Washington and Wilkinson. Other counties that could be affected include Holmes, Humphreys, Leflore, Panola, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, and Yazoo.
In response, the G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center located in Jackson, Mississippi, proactively initiated plans and operations, including assisting high risk patient populations with evacuation and relocation and providing medication refills for evacuating Veterans. The Medical Center has also set up a Mobile Outreach Unit to provide outreach, crisis intervention, assistance with medications, and referral resources to Veterans. The VA Mobile Outreach Unit is located at the Hawkins United Methodist Church, 3736 Halls Ferry Road, Vicksburg, Mississippi, 39180.
The G. V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center has also established a Call Center with a toll-free number, 1-888-530-5854, to assist patients and their families. The Call Center is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist.
